October 13, 2023
Employers are given notice that an application for automotive exemption for a project at Ford in Oakville, Ontario has been approved. The exemption only applies to the applicant and for the specific project if awarded the contract.

Background
A Letter of Understanding between the Ontario Sheet Metal Workers Conference and OSM was signed in November 2019 that sets out a protocol for signatory contractors to apply for exemption from the terms of fabrication under Articles 9 and 29 of the Collective Agreement for the Automotive sector. This protocol was established to mitigate grievances associated with supply and installation of proprietary designed equipment that is manufactured outside the Province of Ontario. This application process is only eligible for the Automotive industry.

Applications are reviewed by a joint committee comprised of representatives of OSM and the Conference. The OSM Board of Directors only appoints members that have expertise in the automotive sector to the Joint Sheet Metal Automotive Review Committee. (JSMARC)
